Catherine Burry
Painter – Sculptor

With precise and generous gestures, lines unfurl, curves spring to life, contrasts are revealed. All with a view to creating energy and shape.

“Stand like a tree, between earth and sky;
move like the wind between the branches.”

Catherine BurryThis tenet of Taoism has accompanied Catherine Burry throughout her atypical artistic journey, which, since her adolescence has progressed from design to dance, from yoga to martial arts, including iaido, the martial art of Japanese sword-fighting arts, which is based on “living life in harmony.”

In Catherine’s paintings, gesture, colour and texture merge to blend seamlessly in her attempt to create balance from chaos, and cannot easily be described in rational language. Her use of natural pigments and subtle mixtures to create form and texture evokes elements of nature, earth, air, fire, water… By modifying and contrasting light and shadow, Catherine creates effects of depth and movement. Her paintings radiate an evocative energy, which instantly attracts the viewer’s attention.

Catherine’s sculptures reflect a more deliberate approach, due to her choices of materials and the desired forms. Yet, each work is an exploration, a dance between her inner vision and the properties of the materials she selects. She addresses every shape that emerges, guiding it, and letting it materialize organically. Catherine does not seek to impose her will on the materials; rather, she opts to work in close harmony with them.

Catherine’s artistic approach bears witness to her constant search for balance and harmony between and among the contradictory and complementary forces shaping existence. Her works are the result of a personal creative approach emanating from her inner vision, in which the slightest gesture has meaning, reflecting the subtle dynamics of life, and reminding us of our need to adapt to them.

Catherine’s work encourages contemplation and reflection. She aims for an aesthetic experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul. She is confident in the power of art to connect us with our essence, and to remind us of our need for harmony and beauty.
